A wee tribute to my nana, who made beautiful date scones for Sunday afternoon teas.

Ingredients
For the easy date scones
- 2½ cups self-rising flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1½ cups chopped dates
- 2 tablespoons mixed peel (optional)
- ¾ cup cream
- ¾ cup milk
- Extra milk or cream, for brushing
Method
For the easy date scones
- Preheat the oven to 210°C (190°C fan bake). Line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Whisk the flour, sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl.
- Stir in the dates and the mixed peel, if using.
- Make a well in the centre and pour in the cream and milk. Mix quickly to form a soft dough.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a rectangular shape 2–3cm thick.
- Cut into 12 squares, arrange on the prepared tray and brush with extra milk or cream.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
