A wee tribute to my nana, who made beautiful date scones for Sunday afternoon teas.

For the easy date scones

  • 2½ cups self-rising flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1½ cups chopped dates
  • 2 tablespoons mixed peel (optional)
  • ¾ cup cream
  • ¾ cup milk
  • Extra milk or cream, for brushing

For the easy date scones

  • Preheat the oven to 210°C (190°C fan bake). Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  • Whisk the flour, sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl.
  • Stir in the dates and the mixed peel, if using.
  • Make a well in the centre and pour in the cream and milk. Mix quickly to form a soft dough.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a rectangular shape 2–3cm thick.
  • Cut into 12 squares, arrange on the prepared tray and brush with extra milk or cream.
  • Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
