Ingredients
For the green tomato chutney
- 1.3kg unripe tomatoes — chopped
- 2 onions — chopped
- 2 granny smith apples — peeled, cored and chopped
- 2¼ cups malt vinegar
- 1 cup raw sugar
- 2 teaspoons garlic salt
- 2 tablespoons mixed spice
Method
For the green tomato chutney
- Place the green tomatoes in a large saucepan with the onions, apples, vinegar, sugar and garlic salt.
- Tie the mixed spice in a small piece of muslin to enclose it. Add it to the saucepan.
- Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 50–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until there is very little liquid left. Remove the spice bag.
- Spoon into hot sterilised jars and seal immediately. Keep in the refrigerator once opened.
